Are you a Workaholic?

Permalink Closed
In the day of the Internet and the ability to bring our work into our home life brings its challenges and benefits. On one hand many of us count our blessings with working from home as it is our only option.

On the other hand, separating work and recreational time can be challenging since the lines can become blurred. I have worked from home now since 2004 and knew right away I had to set some ground rules to separate my life. I have my set of rules and work/school hours set aside. When my work is done, I can walk away with a clear mind to unplug and truly relax.

Then one day I got  a laptop......Wow, did the ease of travel, work, and school become a breeze! Nothing stopped me any longer as I simply brought it with me to visit family.

The down side........the laptop is always on and in my living room. I had to find new boundaries of turning it off and/or putting it to sleep. I found once I found this schedule, the anxiety and 'unplugging' became much much easier.

So with that said, do you find time away from work? If so, tell us more! How do you create fun time in the hibernating winter months.

I made the mistake of bringing my laptop into the bedroom. My husband loves to watch Top Gear - the British version, not the American one, and I work or do school while he's doing that, but that's not so great for sleep patterns.

So, I make myself turn it off and knit or embroider for a 1/2 hour before I go to sleep. NO WORK, NO COMPUTER, NO NOTHING but relaxing my brain to get ready for bed, added plus, I am getting ahead on my Christmas gifts!

I also am not allowing myself to touch any of the computers in the house until after dinner is made and the dishes are in the dishwasher. Ya gotta have order in order to have rule over a 16 year old and a 7 year old, or they will just walk all over you. :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Mary

Hey Mary,

Great thought process there on clearing your mind before bed. I do this automatically now each night when I turn off the computer at 6 pm. Then I know its me time and wind down etc. Not everyone realizes how important it is to do this so you get a restorative sleep and allow yourself to drift.
